The garments exhibited in this pop-up are the result of a recent residency at Frans Masereel Centrum, an art centre in Belgium for print-making experimentation and production.
I started printing on garments as part of an ongoing personal process of understanding the purpose of clothes and the meaning of dressing. When you get dressed, you are putting on your psychic armour (a term I bastardised from artist and good friend Joseph Buckley) Briefly, your clothes should make you feel empowered and protected, supremely, psychically. The feeling you have when you wear your favourite clothes. You should only wear your favourite clothes. Anything that doesn't make you feel that way must be purged from your wardrobe, it's a useless dead object.
Through my Tydrax 618 label I want to repurpose those dead objects into someone else's favourite clothes.
I think dressing is also an active collage process. It's an effort of layering and contextualising your body, so I'm hoping to create garments in a way that's sympathetic to this collage-dressing process. And it's great to bend the printing process in a way that creates unique iterations, like, I don't have to pretend I'm a factory, I can be as messy with these things as I am when I'm making my paintings. The images draw upon lucky mascots, lucky numbers and personal mantras, cartoon abstraction and general curse-protection.
I've also produced a little selection of accessory items. One-off patches, so that people can sew themselves and maybe bring back the psychic power of an old garment, and there's sweetheart charms with built in survival whistles, along with my own special PET bottle holders, because we need to be re-using these damn plastic bottles!
I hope people can come by, try things on, read the books and cuddle the sculptures. All lifeforms are invited to the picnic!
